Jade Nair is the curator of Michaelis Galleries, the University of Cape Town’s fine art gallery. She holds a postgraduate degree in curatorship from the University of Cape Town. Her thesis, Redressing Vogue, is a curatorial intervention in the visual language of a digital archive, constructed with strategies of collage and overlay. Its intention to disrupt a 1955 issue of Vogue South Africa & Rhodesia circles more broadly around a critique of sexism, racism and classism in the fashion industry. Over the past decade, Jade has managed and contributed to a diverse array of curatorial projects, ranging from documentary films, exhibitions and digital archives to symposia. She has collaborated widely with both private and public stakeholders in the arts and heritage sectors, including the Iziko Museums of South Africa, NIROX Arts, Cape Town Art Fair and the District Six Museum. Informed by her experience of volunteering during the salvage process, Jade co-curated Of Smoke and Ash: The Jagger Library Memorial Exhibition in 2022, which acknowledged the loss of the University of Cape Town’s Jagger Library and the destruction of the African Studies collection, as well as celebrating the community effort of the salvage. The exhibition also prompted questions around the role of libraries and archives in the context of the decolonial project. Much of her work has centred on the afterlives of slavery and apartheid in the Western Cape with a focus on material culture, and more specifically fashion. Jade co-curated a symposium, Uncovering: Women’s Invisible Labour in The Cape, for which she convened a panel that considered both the labour of fashion and fashion itself as an act of refusal and resistance.
